Literacy

At Cobden Primary School students study Literacy daily in a two hour Literacy Block. Literacy is inclusive of the 6 components of successful reading incorporated and delivered through Core Literacy: phonics, phonemic awareness, spelling, reading and writing fluency and English.

Our comprehensive Literacy Program, which is designed to foster your child's love for reading, writing, and communication. Our program combines both explicit instruction and student-centred approaches to ensure a well-rounded and effective learning experience.

At the heart of our Literacy Program is a commitment to research-based practices and proven strategies that have demonstrated positive outcomes for students. We draw on a range of programs and methodologies that have been successful in enhancing literacy skills in children.

Some key components of our Literacy Program include:

  1. Sounds-Write: We incorporate the Sounds-Write program, which focuses on teaching phonics and phonemic awareness. By systematically introducing sounds and their corresponding spellings, we help your child develop strong foundational skills for reading and spelling.

  2. Science of Reading: Our program aligns with the Science of Reading approach, which emphasizes the importance of understanding how language is processed in the brain. This approach supports the development of critical skills such as phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.

  3. 6 Reading Components: We address the six essential components of reading: oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. By targeting each of these components, we ensure a holistic approach to literacy instruction that supports your child's overall reading proficiency.

  4. Colourful Semantics: Our program incorporates the use of Colourful Semantics, a visual approach that helps students understand and use grammatically correct sentences. This strategy enhances their language development and improves their ability to express themselves effectively.

  5. Heggerty: We integrate Heggerty activities into our program, which focus on daily phonemic awareness exercises. These activities help your child develop a keen ear for sounds in words, promoting their phonemic awareness skills and supporting their reading and spelling abilities.

  6. Structured Literacy: Students are exposed to rich literature through read-alouds, building vocabulary, comprehension and background knowlegde. Students respond to texts through sentence, paragraph and text level writing. The teaching of reading and writing is integrated within our Literacy Program.

Our Literacy Program goes beyond these specific methodologies, as we continuously seek to incorporate innovative and research-backed strategies into our teaching practices. We aim to provide a stimulating and engaging learning environment where your child can develop strong literacy skills, confidence in their abilities, and a lifelong passion for reading and writing.

Numeracy

We believe that instilling the love of mathematics ensures that our students are prepared for their future. We have passionate and creative teachers who make connections between the big mathematical ideas and meaningful real-life experiences for the students.  Staff use a range of innovative methods to engage students in Numeracy such as: hands on, interactive, environment, technology, investigative and collaborative work. We continuously seek to incorporate innovative and research-backed strategies into our teaching practices.

The Arts

Our student’s creativity is encouraged and nurtured through visual art. Our Arts program focuses on the creative elements of visual art. Students create and respond to artworks in many forms using a wide array of materials, techniques and technologies.

Throughout the year, our students are taught a diverse range of art skills though studying the works of national and international artists, as well as learning about how art can be closely linked with culture. We explore materials, techniques, technologies and processes to create art, drawing ideas from other artists. Students work independently and collaboratively with their classmates and teacher to create meaningful pieces.

Physical Education

The Physical and Sport Education program at Cobden Primary School is an engaging, extensive, well-balanced and above all, inclusive program. Our goal is to nurture in our students a love of physical activity and play, instil a need for physical fitness and develop a sense of fair play and co-operation. The program aims to explore physical activity and movement, whilst developing students’ personal and social skills, in line with the Victorian Curriculum. Movement is powerful in any context and the health and well being of our students is fundamental when delivering our PE program.
